Details about the Sun Microsystems Java environment

Java Web Start - important security warning

When you first install our software, the Java Web Start environment will prompt you to accept the software that is signed by DigiStamp, Inc.

Warning to our users, do read this security warning and confirm that the signer is DigiStamp, Inc. At some later time, the automatic update feature of Web Start may prompt you again to confirm a signature. Be careful to confirm the domain name of the signer is digistamp.com to avoid rogue software from executing on your computer. If you think that you may have missed one of these warnings or you simply want to reload the software (rechecking all signatures) then: 1. Use the Java Web Start control to un-install IP-Protector, and 2. come back to our web site and re-install the application. See the instruction here.

The Java environment can be used for running a variety of applications. The software libraries that comprise the Java environment must be the unaltered version of what you recieve from Sun Microsystems. Also, you should take care to avoid viruses and trojan horses. We make note of these appropriate precautions to help avoid the compromise of your private key.

Java Web Start description

This Java software is a little less convenient to use the first time, but offers a safer and richer interactive user environment.

A two step process is required for the IP-Protector installation due to the special nature of working with SECURE and private digital signatures.

Each time you use our application it is checked that no "outside" tampering has occurred to our software in an attempt to access your private signing key. The Java Web Start environment uses digital signatures (code signing technique)to allow users to verify that the software has not been tampered with and that signed code will is tied to the identity of the author. Digital signatures provide accountability, not protection from a malicious software. (external information sources for details).

The Internet offers many advantages and special challenges and responsibilities related to managing your computer. Java technology was developed in the era of the Internet connection and has features to help users manage their security. We expect that you will see many more applications like IP-Protector delivered in this Sun Microsystems Java Web Start method.

Sun's Java Web Start systems

To run the Java Client systems, users need to have Java Web Start version 1.0 or greater installed. The environment is available for Microsoft Windows (95,98,NT,2000), Linux (i386), MAC (10.1) and Sun Solaris platforms. Java Web Start manages web-based java applications and manages local caching or remote applications so that you can run the latest system quickly and receive updates easily. It also allows you to run an application when you are not connected to the network. Before you run a Java based system for the first time you must install Java Web Start.

The first time you run a the IP-Protector application there will also be a short delay (typically around 3 minutes) as the application software is downloaded into a cache on your computer. On subsequent runs of IP-Protector, the start-up time will be much shorter, and should prove no inconvenience. Upgrades to the IP-Protector software will be automatically detected and installed.
